Daily Update of Torrential Rain and Flood Situation in Pakistan

Overview:

Country-wide torrential rains caused unprecedented and outrageous floods throughout Pakistan except in Sindh where minor damages are reported. The current spate of torrential rains and flash floods started on 21st July 2010. Initially it played havoc in eastern parts of Baluchistan which includes: Barkhan, Kohlu, Sibi, Jafferabad and Naseerabad districts. The relief operations in the affected areas of Baluchistan were not over yet, when floods struck district Rajanpur, Layya and Gujranwala in Punjab. Subsequently, the torrential rains and tides of floods turned towards Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Azad Jammu & Kashmir and engulfed various small and large towns in these areas. The most affected areas in KPK are: Shangla, Swat, Minghora, Mansehra, Charsadda, Noshehra towns, where routine life has come to a complete halt and affected communities in most parts of KPK are still waiting for rescue and relief.

Initial reports reveals that around 1 million people have been affected by worst floods in the country and more than 600 people are reported to have died mainly due to either being washed away, collapsing of their houses or electrocution caused due to flooding of ground surface. The government authorities and armed forces, supported by the humanitarian organizations and NGOs, have started a major rescue effort to reach out to stranded communities that have been cut off by raging torrents of water.

The severity of the flooding has caused enormous damage to the country’s infrastructure in both rural and urban areas. Entire settlements of mud-brick houses are reported to have been swept away, major bridges have collapsed, and some major provincial cities have been totally cut off after road and rail links were severed. The widespread disruption to the country’s communications network meant that reaching the worst-hit areas of the country has become extremely difficult.

In order to facilitate coordinated humanitarian response in the affected areas and enable humanitarian organizations to have substantial planning for their humanitarian activities, SPO, with the support of its partner organizations, initiated rapid assessments in the affected areas and share it with relevant stakeholders in the form of daily update. Punjab Province:
Mianwali:

Flood on 30th July 2010 in Mianwali has hit various parts of the districts and Mari Indus, Tabiser, Kala Bagh, Kot Chanana, Qamar Mushani Kacha, Qamar Mushani Paka, Mala Khel, Essa Khel, are the severely affected area. The details of damages are yet come as currently the focus of humanitarian assistance is towards rescuing of the stranded communities. 

As per initial assessments it has been reported that various part of the affected area are heavly flooded which is evident from the fact that in Vanda Kukran Wala, water level has reached 12 feet. More than 2000 people have been stranded and awaiting for rescue while sitting on their roof tops or hill tops in the area.

Until recently, only 25 tents were provided by relevant authorities to the affected communities in the UC and helicopter services for rescuing of the stranded people is reported to be operational but insufficient for huge number of stranded people.

Similarly, 150 families belonging from Mari Indus have been displaced.  Displaced families are being  cooked meal by Imam Khumaini Trust but still their are various  hazards being faced by displaced communities, which include; shortage of washrooms, spread of diseases like diarrhoea, skin infection etc.  Until now, 5-6 snake bite incidents have been reported from the area.

District Rajanpur:

District Rajanpur is the most affected district of South Punjab as 22,000 families are affected. Out of severely affected families, 400 families have taken shelter in schools and 4000 families have been taken shelter in their relatives’ homes. Major infrastructure damages include washing away of 15 bridges and 16 schools besides collapse of various houses. The most affected Tehsils are: Jam Pur, Rajanpur and Rojan. Today, 7000 cusec water will hit the Tehsil Rojhan.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa:

The process of area-wise rapid assessments yet to be initiated in PKP, as currently, all humanitarian efforts are focussed towards rescuing of the stranded communities and as thousands of people are yet to be rescued from most affected areas of Noshehra, Charsadda, Swat, Mansehra etc.

A partial assessment of damages have been completed in D.I. Khan and Tank and same is reproduced below for substantial planning of relief humanitarian organizations for carrying out relief activities in the area:

District D I Khan:

The District Government has established relief camps in two Government Schools, Wensum School and Middle School No 4 where District Administration will distribute cooked meal among the flood affected. Total affected families are 13550 and many areas are not accessible.
