Monsoon Update 1: (01:40am, 03 August 2013 )

Various parts of Pakistan are under low pressure which caused strong monsoon currents and receiving heavy thundershowers. Today (02 August 2013) 89mm rainfall was recorded in Sialkot. Meteorological department of Pakistan issued warning of heavy rainfall at scattered places of Nasirabad, Zhob and Qalat divisions of Balochistan district which may cause flash floods in local streams f low lying and vulnerable areas. Despite the heavy rains in scattered places of the country, all the rivers are flowing from normal to low flood level except River Kabul that is flowing at Medium level flood in Warsuk-Naushera reach. Commissioner of Peshawar city had declared emergency in Hayatabat and Regi areas of the city. Road link between Peshawar and Charsada districts has been cut off due to high flooding in Badinhi Nullah. The high discharge of rain water from Khyber agency is causing flooding in local streams and adjoining areas of Peshawa city are advised to remain cautious. Pak Army has been called for search and rescue of inundated families in Peshawar by the time of filling this situation update. Deputy commission Chitral district reported 3 deaths, 40 houses fully collapsed, 4 bridges have been wiped out as well drainage and water systems have also been damaged in various parts of the district. According to the media reports (Geo News) flood water has been entered in police line area of District Loralai that played havoc with office buildings and police barracks, further details are yet to come.

Monsoon Update 2: (05:00pm, 03 August 2013)

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued warning of flash floods in the hill torrents of Balochistan and urban flooding for Larkana, Hyderabad and Karachi districts of Sindh in next 24-36 hours. Heavy thundershower have also been predicted for Balochistan, Sindh, KP, South Punjab, Kahsmir and its adjoining hilly areas that may cause flash floods and urban flooding. Today the maximum rainfall (82mm) was recorded at Bannu district. For the next 24 hours widespread thundershowers are expected in wide spread areas of North Balochistan, Upper Punjab, Islamabad, GB and few places of Southern Sindh. Rajanpur, Sialkot, Narrowal, Peshawar, Lorralai, Sibbi, Qalat, Hyderabad and Karachi districts are facing localized flooding and hill torrents, according the media reports. 10 deaths reported in rain related incidents out of them 3 persons killed due to electrocution in Karachi and 3 deaths have been reported in Chitral district.

Monsoon Update 3: (22:30, 04 August 2013)

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued warning that River Indus at Chasma and Kala Bagh and River Kabul may attain Medium to High Flood level in next 24 hours. Today highest rainfall 153mm was recorded at Jacbobad. For next 24 hours rain-thundershower is expected at isolated places in Upper Sindh (Sukkur, Larkana divisions), Lower Sindh ( Karachi, Hyderabad divisions), South Punjab, KP, Balochistan, Kashmir, Islamabad, Northeast Punjab (Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala divisions). According to the media reports so far 45 causalities have been reported from various parts of the country. Karachi, Hyderabad, Rajanpur, Peshawar, Chitral and Charsadda Loralai, Sibi and Naseerabad districts are among worst hit areas. The deputy commissioner of Rajanpur has declared emergency in the district and a population of 200 thousands feared affected. In Karachi, Malir is worst hit area where almost 3000 thousands belonging to various villages, have been shifted in relief camps where they need shelter, food, medicines and clean drinking water immediately.

Monsoon Update 4: ( 14:45, 5 August 2013)

Current monsoon rains are playing havoc with life, private and public infrastructure and livelihoods across the country. The death toll has increased up to 60 and almost half of them are reported from Karachi where people are died of electrocution, demolition of house roofs and walls and other rain related incidents/accidents. This is first time in 8 days time that PMD issues no severe weather event warning however forecasted widespread rains across Punjab and Balochistan. During last 24 hours, maximum rainfall 46mm was recorded at Turbat, Balochistan. According to the Federal Flood Commission (FFC) River Indus is flowing in Medium Flood at Kalabagh and Low Flood at Tarbela, Chashma, Taunsa & Guddu Barrage. River Ravi is also flowing in Low Flood at Shahdra, whereas River Kabul is in Medium Flood Stage at Warsak-Nowshera reach. River Swat is also flowing in Low Flood at Charsadda Road Bridge. Other main rivers i.e. Jhelum, Chenab & Sutlej are flowing normal. UNOCHA’s sitrep 1 issued on 4th of August revealed that only in Rajanpur hill torrents unleashed by heavy rains swept through over 187,000 acres of farmland and affected over 165,000 people whereas Karachi received 140mm rain and is worst hit. Malir and Liyara Nullahs as well as rain water from Kirthar range played havoc with multiple localities of the city. Jacobabad, Thatha, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Benazirabad and Sanghar have also been affected by heavy rainfall. In Balochistan Jhalmagsi and Sibi are worst hit districts and in KPK deaths and injuries have been reported from Bannu, Laki Marwat, Peshawr, Chitral, Charsadd and FATA agencies.

Monsoon Update 5: (18:00, 6 August 2013)

A well marked rain system (low pressure) is prevailing on northwestern parts of Balochistan and moderate monsoon currents are penetrating into central and upper parts of the country. PMD issued no severe weather event warning for next 24 hours however scattered rain thunder shower in various parts of central Punjab, upper KP and northwest Balochistan. Death toll has jumped to 58 that feared increase further and 30 persons are reported severely injured in rain related incidents. 81341 people have been directly affected and displaced in Punjab, KP and Sindh while the figures of Balochistan are awaited. NDMA and PDMAs have launched relief activities and extended tents, food packs, mosquito nets and blankets to the affected families. Total 15330 tents, 3995 food packs and 13000 mosquito nets have been distributed among affected families. SPO has also started relief activities and allocated 1.2 million rupees for the provision of food packs to 500 families in Rajanpur, Naseerabad and Karachi/Thatha. Rapid damage and need assessment reports are in the process and would be available within a couple of days on the website.

32nd Program Review Meeting 2013

32nd Program Review Meeting The 32nd Program Review Meeting was held from June 19-21, 2013 at Nathya gali. More than one hundred and fifty SPO staff participated from all regions. The assembly gathered with the idea of Looking back –Planning forward. SPO staff celebrated, cultural evening on the second day.  A team building exercise and lecture of prominent Journalist Zia ud din were also part of the three day program agenda.
