SPO Karachi region organized one day trainings for the newly appointed Women Medico legal officers, Police officials, Lawyers (prosecutors), District Court Judges on Medico legal services, their importance, contamination of evidences, usage and practice of SOPs on Anti Rape Act 2016, Domestic Violence Act 2015, and Anti Honor Killing Act 2016. Dr. Summaiya Tariq, senior Women Medico-Legal Officer at Police Surgeon’s Office, Karachi delivered the training. A total of 31 participants attended the training workshop. 15 Medico-Legal Officers, 2 Police Surgeons, 3 police Inspectors, 9 Public Prosecutors/advocates, and 2 district and session Judges participated in the training.
Women Medico-Legal Officers from Sindh Government Hospitals Korangi, Saudabad, New Karachi, and Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center and male MLOs from Civil Hospital participated in the training. Sub Inspector and Assistant Sub-Inspector came from Police Stations Malir City, Sukhan, and Steel Town. Police Surgeons, Medico-Legal from Malir from Health Department also participated in the training workshop. Public Prosecutors hailing from Malir, East, and Central Karachi and district Judges from Malir and West Karachi participated in the training workshop. Various departmental heads were contacted to share the nominations for the training. The trainer adopted various methodologies including discussion, brainstorming, role play and group work to share the knowledge on GBV guidelines from WHO.
Main learning areas of the training were as follows;
• Concept of GBV and its various forms in public and domestic sphere
• Guiding principles and role of health Care giver in GBV prevention and fundamental principles of handling of GBV survivors
• Newly adopted medico Legal Certificate (MLC) in GBV cases
• A step by step approach on handling, working and physically examining of the GBV cases with confidentiality and consent.
At the end of the day, Training Manual and presentation were shared in soft and table calendars were distributed among the participants. Ms. Raheema Panhwar, Regional Coordinator thanked to all department officials for their cooperation to ensure presence of WMLOs for training. She also appreciated SPO team for training arrangements. On this occasion Ms. Shazia Shaheen, Head of Program, SPO paid her gratitude to all participants and hoped that they will further impart and share this knowledge with their fellows. She also distributed training certificates among participants.
